French Quarter Historic District
New Orleans, LA | Historic District
The Story
The French Quarter is one of America's most protected historic districts. When carriers needed 5G coverage here, they faced seemingly insurmountable aesthetic barriers from the Vieux Carre Commission—the body that has safeguarded the Quarter's architectural integrity since 1936.
The Challenge
Integrate small cell technology into Jackson Square and surrounding streets without compromising the 19th-century gas lamp aesthetic that defines this UNESCO-recognized cultural landscape. The Vieux Carre Commission required that any new infrastructure be virtually indistinguishable from the historic fixtures that have illuminated these streets for over 150 years.
Our Approach
Custom gas lamp reproductions housing small cell equipment, designed in close collaboration with the Vieux Carre Commission to be indistinguishable from authentic 19th-century fixtures. Each pole was hand-finished to match the patina of century-old gas lamps, with equipment concealed within historically accurate enclosures.
Outcomes
- 100% carrier compliance with historic preservation guidelines
- Zero visual distinction from authentic historic gas lamps
- Full approval from Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office
- Model adopted for historic district deployments nationwide
